To recap, these pics are taken from a 15 minute video clip of dailies from the set of Second Hand Lions. These dailies aren’t supposed to be available so I can’t give a link to their exact location. The veil of secrecy may be lifted in the future in which case the loyal fans at KidActors will be the first to know.
There has been some speculation about stills of Haley waving his arms in apparent frustration and I theorised that he may be irritated by his unstable voice. I’ll tell you that his cracking voice is beginning to grow on me. He sounds exactly like an adolescent boy and the voice will be perfectly consistent with the character of Walter.
I’ve studied the clips in a clearer video player format and the Walter character is showing some powerful emotion in the scene where his voice cracks most noticeably. He is trying to communicate his needs to his forbidding elderly Great-uncles and his brow is creased in a frown behind the fringe of hair. His nose is also crinkled up in the most cute and endearing way. (He’s still the boy we know and love) At the end of the scene after the director says “cut” he does the arm waving bit and it may be nothing more than a release of tension. There’s a bit in the Pay it Forward DVD special features which shows Haley skipping back towards the house after the evening scene where he sends his Mom off in the taxi-cab. An active boy releasing tension after intense concentration. Everyone whose worked with him says that he goes back to being just Haley between takes. This is probably how he does it, with some physical display.
So please everybody, don’t get worried that Haley isn’t enjoying his acting any more or turning in a bad performance. I’m sure that he’s fine.
Now, onto some new stuff from the dailies.
In the still above, Uncle Garth (Caine) on the left and Uncle Hub (Duvall) are sitting on the porch in the afternoon. Walter (Haley) sits nearby on the stoop. Garth appears to be cleaning a pipe or something and both men take an occasional drink of something which is either iced tea or Kentucky sippin’ bourbon.
WALTER: Can we use the telephone right here if my Mom calls?
GARTH: Don’t have one.
