According to the official Ryan Merriman website... as found on his latest newsflash page... Ryan Merriam will be playing opposite Haley's character, (Robert "Gar" Gartland) as "Matt Dunbar". From the current newsflash...

Quote:

RYAN ANNOUNCES A NEW PROJECT…

After wrapping FD3 [Final Destination 3], Ryan had a little down time to celebrate the 4th and attend a family wedding in Kentucky. Then it was right back to work as he headed to LA on July 18h to follow up on some projects in development and to pursue some new ones. As luck would have it, once again, Ryan was in the right place at the right time to land his next big role. He arrived on Monday, auditioned on Wednesday and had an offer on his next film by Friday. Sometimes timing really is everything in the film business. He will co-star with Haley Joel Osment in "Home of the Giants", which will begin shooting in North Carolina in September. Ryan is honored to be sharing screen time with Haley, whose career he admires.

"HOTG" is a coming of age drama set in an Indiana town that literally lives for basketball and rooting for the home team. The story centers around two teenage friends, Osment, who will portray Robert "Gar" Gartland, a school journalist covering the basketball team on its way to the state championship. He idolizes the town's star basketball player, Matt Dunbar, played by Ryan. During the team's quest for the championship, the boys get caught up in a dilemma when Matt is asked to throw the big game. Befriended by Matt's brother, who is a former Giants team player, the boys are taken in by him. He ends up being anything but the hero they thought he was.

"Home of the Giants" is a story of friendship. The kind of that brings two unlikely characters together to form a friendship that only gets stronger with time. It's based on trust. An "I've got your back" through the good and bad times kind of story. Even in situations that cross the line between right and wrong, these two friends hold tight to their belief in each other. It's the story of two friends who inspire and encourage each other and stand strong together, especially through adversity.

Sounds like an interesting story... and one that should be different, and quite interesting for Haley. Also interesting that Haley is 17 and Ryan is 22.
