Several weeks ago there was some negative speculation here on the boards as to the ability of Secondhand to be able to pull in an fair amount at the box office. The estimate I saw Friday before any numbers were in was 5th place with $9m. The most recent estimate I saw at imdb.com was 3rd place with $12.8m.
I'm not a numbers wiz and nobody can predict exactly how a movie will do... Pay It Forward by comparison made $9.6m its opening weekend and $33.5m total at the box office. I am sure that Secondhand will be guaranteed $35-$45m domestically plus half of that collectively from other countries (total gross $60m). I think it will do well on VHS/DVD sales and rental, too.
So, while Secondhand may not be a box office blowout, it will hold it's own and will probably pay for itself with a little profit to boot. More than can be said for some of the huge, overbugeted cookie-cutter movies.
And if you haven't seen it because of reviews or whatever, go anyway. All of you that saw Disney's Holes will almost definitely like this movie as well. It's a movie that is often funny, has good morals and never takes itself too seriously.
